Key role for DuraPozz® Pro on De Hoop Dam
De Hoop Dam on the Steelpoort River in Limpopo Province is one of the largest dams built in the last twenty years in South Africa. 1020 metres long, it is also the biggest ‘Rollcrete’ dam in the country. The use of innovative concrete technology is helping to speed up the construction work and save costs on the project.
For the first time in South Africa, ‘High Paste, High Workability’ Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is being used. One of the major ingredients is the high grade classified fly ash, DuraPozz® Pro supplied from Ash Resources’ Matla plant. Deliveries began in March 2008 and by November 2011, 130 000 tons of the estimated total requirement of 150-165 000 tons of fly ash had been supplied. Construction of the De Hoop Dam will require about 1,2million cubic metres of concrete, of which approximately 85% will be RCC incorporating DuraPozz® Pro.
During November 2011, the Dam’s project team placed 131 000 cubic metres of RCC concrete, establishing a new national record for a continuous pour. Consolidating their reputation for reliable deliveries and customer orientated logistical planning, Ash Resources contributed to the record performance by supplying over 20 000 tons of DuraPozz® Pro over a 30-day period at an average of 30 – 35 road tanker loads a day.
Ash Resources is proud to be part of this major dam project and is playing a key role towards ensuring that it is on track for final site deestablishment in 2012. Fly ash has become virtually a standard component of concrete mixes for water retaining structures throughout the world.
