Coega Harbour, Port Elizabeth, South Africa (2002 – 2009)??

One million cubic metres of concrete for Coega

Transnet’s R10 billion Port of Ngqura at Coega near Port Elizabeth is a world-class deep water harbour that has been created from scratch over the last nine years. Ngqura is South Africa’s eighth commercial port and the first to be developed in the last thirty-seven years.

On 4 March 2011, the main contractor, suppliers and other involved parties gathered at the Port to celebrate the batching of the millionth cubic metre of concrete. During the harbour construction, Ash Resources supplied 73 350 tons of DuraPozz® classified fly ash from its Matla Plant to make the one million cubic metres of concrete. Coega is believed to be the first project in South Africa to have ‘consumed’ this amount of concrete. Placing the enormous volume in Coega a relatively short contract time and under difficult conditions has been an immense challenge.

The concrete mixes for all of the concrete works have been predominantly based on a 70/30 OPC/fly ash design, which is well established as the standard for high durability, long-life concrete in a marine environment.

With processing plants located at five Eskom power stations and in excess of five million tons of ‘run of station’ fly ash under their management, Ash Resources was able to provide the necessary guarantees of consistent quality and supply continuity.
